Education

The Simulation Training Centre at the School of Nursing, HKU, is dedicated to providing comprehensive simulation-based learning experiences for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students. The centre supports the Bachelor of Nursing (Full-time) programme, Master of Nursing programme, and Master of Science in Nursing Programme, offering a range of simulation activities, including high-fidelity simulation, computer-based simulation, standardized patient scenarios, and VR simulation.

  • Undergraduate programme
Students in all years are required to participate in tailor-made, high-fidelity simulation activities, designed and assessed by clinical course coordinators. These activities are integrated into the course assessment components to enhance student engagement and ensure the relevance of the simulations to the course content. Furthermore, students participate in various simulation activities before attending clinical practicum, enabling them to learn from past errors committed by students in a safe and supportive environment, ultimately enhancing patient safety.

  • Postgraduate programme
Students in the Master of Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programmes also have the opportunity to engage in simulation activities, such as Advanced Health Assessment. Similar to the undergraduate programme, these activities are tailor-made for the content of each course and are incorporated into the course assessment component, ensuring student engagement and learning.

  • Train-the-trainer
Lecturers receive workshops on simulator operation, simulation scenario design, and debriefing simulation scenarios with students. Furthermore, the Healthcare Education and Simulation Workshop, organized by the centre's team members each year, aims to provide global educators with information and skills on the latest developments in healthcare and simulation-based learning and education. This workshop also serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and exchanging ideas. In addition to the various simulation training workshops, the team members at the Simulation Training Centre also host an annual Mentoring Workshop for Clinical Mentors. The goal of this workshop is to train frontline nurses on effective mentoring strategies and techniques. Participants engage in a comprehensive learning experience, which includes presentations, discussions, and scenario-based activities.

Overall, the Simulation Training Centre at the School of Nursing, HKU, is committed to providing a well-rounded and immersive simulation experience for nursing students, ensuring their preparedness for real-life clinical situations and enhancing patient safety.
